Two other Spurgat families lived here: Matylda Spurgat, born in 1878, August Spurgat born in 1879, and his brother Otto Spurgat born in 1880.

We traveled directly from Pilviskis/Pilviskiai. A large sign announced that the 10th anniversary celebration of the community council, (like the one the local guides in Virbalis and Gudkaimas were in charge of) was being held. Our guide explained that the residents elected these local officials but that their role was advisory.

Since this was a private party, we elected not to interfere with their festivities. All the homes were well kept with gardens, flowers, and TV dishes. We wondered whether this property had been made into a collective farm during the Soviet occupation as none of the houses dated to a pre-Soviet era.

About suwalkigermans

I started family research in 1993. My first two books focused on my maternal grandparents. Both families came from Kreis Rosenberg, West Prussia, to Big Rapids, Michigan. I left the Spurgats from Wylkowiszki in the Russian Empire as the third book because of the difficult and challenging research it required. After I published the book in 2010, I wondered what to do next. I thought I might try to share some of my research with others and maybe at the same time, by going digital, someone would find me. When you read the comments, you will see that happened. The best part of all this is helping others.
