We wound our way to the cemetery where a few surprises awaited us. First, the bumper guard from Vilius’ car came off as he backed from the cemetery onto the road to park the car. Next, as we wound our way through the brush, we spotted a partially opened iron gate, similar to one we had just seen in the Lutheran Cemetery near Oszurty/Opsrutai.
Not only that but an identical stone to the one we had just photographed had also been placed in this cemetery! Someone still cared! This was another amazing discovery to me. It was evident that a few graves were being tenderly kept up, and I photographed them.
As we were leaving, Vilius received a phone call from our local guide the previous day, inviting us to her home the next day for a grand lunch of kugelis at noon! We kindly accepted, and I realized that this was a very special invitation, a once in a lifetime opportunity.
